The microorganisms that cause wood rot belong to the family of fungi known as the xilophages. They are able to destroy the basic components of the wood using the wide range of enzymes they possess and therefore causing what is commonly known as rot.
Rot significantly affects the mechanical properties of wood and in particular it's static and dynamic resistance, these been affected even in apparently mild cases of rot.
When the first signs of wood rot become visible, the wood has already lost 20% of its density and therefore all the properties related to this.
Wood rot can be classified into three types:
- Soft rot (photo 1)
- White rot (photo 2)
- Brown rot (photo 3)
These can be distinguished by the alterations in the colour of the wood and by the external appearance of the wood when the activity of xylophagous fungi is intense.
